IIT Bombay offers research internship opportunities to eligible students for early exposure to Research and Development (R&D) in Science, Technology, and emerging areas. This full-time internship is awarded to bright students each academic year for challenging projects proposed by IIT Bombay faculty. Interns are selected based on their academic records and performance in interviews conducted by faculty members. The Internship runs each year for a duration of four to six months, from January to July.

IITB Research Internship Award is designed for undergraduate students from outside IITB to gain research experience. These awards are available for specific research projects. The details of these projects are made available to the candidates so that they can apply for projects of their interest and can prepare themselves well for a rigorous selection procedure. The number of interns will be restricted to the number of projects available. The selected interns are required to work full time for four to six months on the project and will be given a fixed stipend of Rs. 15,000/- per month.
